Flat Rock Cellars Wins Best White at Cuvee!Back to Archive
A Word from Ed
Even in the dead of winter there are always a number of great things happening at Flat Rock Cellars. This past Valentine's Day, I had the pleasure of welcoming a number of customers to my table for lunch - the first of four events included in our new At the Winemaker's Table lunch series. I believe a great time was had by all. Then, at Cuvée 2010, the "Oscars" of the Ontario wine industry, we won not only Best Chardonnay but also Best White Wine for our 2007 Reserve Chardonnay. This is a particularly great honour as these awards are chosen by our winemaking peers.
I also wish to share with you some great news regarding the winemaking team. This coming March, Marlize will be returning to Flat Rock Cellars after her maternity leave as our consulting Winemaker. In this role she will continue to be involved in the great wines we are producing, while at the same time allowing her to spend more time with her son. I believe both Marlize and Flat Rock Cellars will benefit from this collaborative relationship. As a result our Harvest Winemaker, Ross Wise, who was also our Assistant Winemaker during the 2006 and 2007 vintages, will step into the winemaking role. Ross will lead the winemaking team here at Flat Rock and collaborate with Marlize to continue to make some amazing wines.
Flat Rock Wins Best White at Cuvee!
We are thrilled to announce that Flat Rock Cellars took home top White Wine honours from this past weekends' Cuvee 2010 Wine Awards event. On Friday evening, Flat Rock was presented the Best Chardonnay and the Best White Wine awards for our 2007 Reserve Chardonnay.
Known as the "Oscars" of the Ontario wine industry, Cuvee is the only Canadian wine competition where the winning wines are chosen by a panel of Winemakers from Ontario. In 2010, 56 wineries entered their best three wines into the competition (with some having the option to enter up to two more if they distribute throught the LCBO), for a total of over 200 wines; Chardonnay being one of the largest categories.
The 2007 Reserve Chardonnay is a limited production wine that is only made in exceptional vintages. A few select barrels are hand picked through a tasting process following French oak barrel fermentation and approximately 10 months of aging, blended together and further aged for another 10 months in older French oak barrels to develop complexity.
In celebration of this win, Flat Rock Cellars will be offering FREE SHIPPING for one week only (1), on case orders (12 bottles) of the 2007 Reserve Chardonnay to anywhere in Ontario. This wine is currently available for purchase only at Flat Rock Cellars in limited quantities. For more information about this wine shipping regulations and details, or to purchase please click here.
Congratulations to Marlize and the winemaking team!
As many of you know, Marlize Beyers (Flat Rock Cellars' Winemaker) has been away from the winery for the past year on maternity leave. This coming March, Marlize will return to Flat Rock as our Consulting Winemaker. We are all excited about this new phase and look forward to Marlize's continued participation on our winemaking team. As the Consulting Winemaker, Marlize will still have the ability to contribute her winemaking knowledge and expertise, while allowing her to have more time for her son and family.
No stranger to the winery, Harvest Winemaker, Ross Wise (who has replaced Marlize over the past year) will step in as Flat Rock Cellars Winemaker. This Kiwi has been a part of the Flat Rock Cellars team off and on since 2006. Ross began his journey with Flat Rock as a Harvest Intern during the 2006 vintage and quickly became Assistant Winemaker following harvest and throughout 2007. Ross travelled back to his native New Zealand to pursue a winemaking position at Grove Mill Winery in February 2008, only to return to Flat Rock after about a year - the draw of this great vineyard site and winery proved too strong for Ross to resist. Ross will now lead the winemaking team here at Flat Rock full time, and will collaborate with Marlize to create some superb wines full of those "Flat Rock" characteristics you've grown to love. Ross's enthusiasm for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, coupled with his vineyard management expertise and Flat Rock experience will surely lead to the production of some amazing wines beginning with the 2009 vintage. We are very happy with the outcome, and all believe this collaboration puts Flat Rock at the top of its winemaking game!
Welcome back Marlize and congratulations Ross!
At the Winemaker's Table
Valentine's Day is a day for thoughtfulness, romance, and of course dining "collectivo" at Flat Rock Cellars! On February 14th, Ed and Ross hosted the first of four At the Winemaker's Table lunch events here at the winery. This sold out event was great fun and allowed the participants to spend the afternoon at Flat Rock Cellars learning all the in's and out's of what makes this winery tick. A 3-course meal prepared by Chef Mark Hand of Hospitality on Hand included a delicious course of Twisted seared and steamed Atlantic Salmon with a maple soya glaze on an asian vegetable slaw, and a main of Veal Osso Buco "Gremolata" on basil and ermite bleu infused polenta and salsify. Each dish was perfectly paired with Flat Rock Cellars' wines including our 2007 Reserve Pinot Noir and even a tasting of our new, yet to be released Sparkling wine.
The next installment of At the Winemaker's Table is set for May 9th, 2010 at 12:30pm. Guest Chefs for this lunch event are none other than the folks from The Good Earth; a celebrated team of Chefs headed by Nicolette Novak who are at the forefront of the Farm to Table movement in Niagara. For more information about our At the Winemaker's Table and In the Winemaker's Boots programs please click here. To reserve your space at this or the other lunch events, please call the winery at (905) 562-8994. Please ask to speak with Tiffany.
