A Word from Ed

Spring is in the air!  It's at this time of year that we are looking to get out from our winter cocoon to do something fun.  In the coming months there are a ton of great things Flat Rock has to offer.  First, Matt Kramer, author and Wine Spectator columnist, is coming to Ontario to celebrate Somewhereness.  Somewhereness is a term coined by Matt and brings together 6 great Ontario wineries.  The event is not to be missed!

We are again hosting our "F"-ing Wine Tour with our partners Featherstone and Fielding.  You can expect great food and wine combinations and an "F"-ing good time.  Along with these events there will, of course, be our 'In the Winemaker's Boots' series of interactive educational sessions and many other fun, innovative experiences to be had this Spring at Flat Rock Cellars.

We are also beginning to bottle the first of the 2008 Vintage.  The wines continue our fine FRC tradition.  I look forward to sharing them with you.

Great Wines Speak of their Place of Origin

For generations this concept has been at the heart of the best winemaking across the globe. Renowned author and Wine Spectator columnist Matt Kramer infused this universal concept with a distinctly New World sensibility, calling it 'Somewhereness'.

Here in Ontario, a group of six iconic winemakers passionate about expressing their own local flavour have united under the banner of 'Somewhereness':

Charles Baker Wines
Flat Rock Cellars
Malivoire Wine Company
Norman Hardie Winery
Stratus Vineyards
Tawse Winery

The "F"-ing Wine Tour

Soon it will be time for another spring fling at Flat Rock Cellars, Fielding Estate Winery and Featherstone! We have banded together once again to plan this year's fanciful, flavourful "F"-ing Wine Tour.

The Third Annual "F"-ing Winery Tour will take place over two weekends this year-May 2/3 from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm and May 9/10 from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. The passport fee remains $10.00 per person and entitles you to taste two featured wines and enjoy a fitting food pairing with each wine at each winery. Food pairings will focus on fettuccini, fussili and farfalle pasta and each winery will match their ‘F'-ing pasta to their featured wines.

Winemaking Update

It is an exciting time of the year for the winemaking staff. We are currently in the midst of the first bottling of the 2008 vintage.  All our 2008 vintage aromatic wines are finding their way to bottle; these include our Nadja's Vineyard Riesling, our Estate Riesling, Twisted and our Pinot Noir Rosé.  Also, 2008 was a particularly good vintage for Gewürztraminer and it is only in exceptional years like that we bottle and release a single variety Gewürztraminer. 2008 was one of those years and only the second time we have produced this amazing wine.

Our bottling, as you may already know takes place at the back of the winery. Therefore as we are working we can view the vineyards, which are pruned and ready to go for another year. Thus the anticipation of another vintage begins...

From the Cellar

Each month at Flat Rock Cellars we release a previous vintage wine from our cellar library stock exclusive to our Retail Store.

This month we have selected three Pinot Noirs: our 2003, 2004 and 2005 vintages.

Having recently won Silver at the Cuvee Awards for our 2007 Pinot Noir we decided to release these vintages so that our customers may experience how wonderfully our Pinot Noirs improve with age!

Special release pricing of $25.00 this month only.
