Wow, another year is coming to an end. It has been a pleasure to share many exciting times with you our customers. Over the past year we released new wines, won more awards and embraced many new friends. The ride continues and it is as fantastically wild as ever.
Of note, Flat Rock Cellars was awarded White Wine of the Year in Canada from the Canadian Wine Awards. This is great news on its own. However, what gives me even greater pride is the fact that we have won this prestigious award twice in the last three years. Consistently great quality wine is what we strive for every day.
Over the past 2 years we have run our ‘In the Winemaker's Boots' program. It has been a pleasure to share our Flat Rock Cellars passion with all those who participated--especially when we bottled and cracked open the first ever 'In the Winemaker's Boots' Pinot Noir from the 2007 vintage. I know the team who made this wine took great pleasure in the first sip.

Harvest Update: November 2008
As always, the start of the 2008 vintage was met with great anticipation - what would the fruit be like this year? By mid September the fruit was ready to be picked for our third vintage of sparkling wine and the harvest began in earnest on the 11th of September. The different cuvee press fractions showed an abundance of fruit flavours - giving us a good taste of what was to come in the later pickings of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It did not disappoint.
Relative cool conditions throughout the rest of September and October seemed to slow down ripening - giving us an extended growth season for clusters to ripen physiologically. This vintage was unique in the sense that we brought all the Pinot Noir in within one week from the start of picking, followed by a week of Chardonnay processing and then a long break while we waited for the Rieslings to ripen. That gave us time for long cold soaks to extract colour and flavour without the harsh tannins. The Pinots and the Chardonnays received extra care and attention with numerous trials conducted in barrel.
Riesling really took its time in 2008 and was only picked after we brought in our three rows of Syrah and all the Gewurztraminer - highly unusual, but the long wait was worth it - the wines show great minerality and lovely citrus flavours.
With crush at an end we take pride as this was our biggest ever (215 tons, all hand sorted), longest ever (a full month longer than any previous vintage)... and we now have the tallest Inukshuk to date....which brings me to the craftsmen, our brilliant international harvest team of 2008:

Without their dedication, hard work and passion it would not be as successful a vintage (nor would it have been as much fun!)

Then, warm your body and soul by the open air fire, where you can taste our freshly made Icewine marshmallows. Eat them straight from the box or roast them over the fire...you decide! (Skating is free; small fee applies for the Icewine marshmallows.)
