A message from Ed
Budburst, new team members, and helicopters in the vineyard...yep, I'd say there is a lot to talk about. Spring is always a busy time of the year for us in the wine industry. There are plenty of events to plan and attend, people are starting to break out of their slumber to tour again, and the vineyard kicks into high gear.
I consider myself fortunate to be able to collaborate with some excellent, like-minded colleagues on great events such as Somewhereness; a trade and media tasting we hosted at MaRS Discovery District in Toronto on May 8th, which brought to the forefront some of the great wines Ontario is producing. This tasting last year led us directly to a distributor in New York who is keen on spreading the good word about Ontario wines. Soon bottles of Flat Rock will grace the tables of restaurants in New York city and Conneticut. In July, Flat Rock is also a part of the 2nd annual International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration hosted in Niagara from July 20-22, which will highlight 55 national and international producers who specialize in the production of cool climate Chardonnay. But before all this I would like to personally invite you to the winery for our Budburst Celebration on May 25th. We like to think of it as our way of thanking you for being so extremely loyal to us here at Flat Rock. I encourage you to read Jillian's note below for more details and I hope to see you then.

Last week you should have received an invitation (via email) to our annual Budburst Celebration. This is your chance to taste and take home our four new release wines including, the Reserve Pinot Noir 2009 and after many months of being SOLD OUT, The Rogue Pinot Noir 2010.
Join us on the Green Roof Patio, kick up your heels and enjoy some great food and music paired with terrific wines and company on Friday, May 25th from 6:30pm - 9:30pm. Don't worry about the galoshes as Mother Nature owes us one (see below), but I do ask that you dress comfortably.
Budburst is complimentary to you. Read on...
A word from the Wise
by Ross Wise, Winemaker
An early spring is both exciting and nerve-racking for those in the wine industry. The enjoyment of a new season beginning and watching new shoots emerge is balanced by the nervousness of wondering if there is a damaging spring frost on the way. Already this season we have dodged two frost ‘bullets'. On two consecutive frosty nights in late April, with the help of our friends at Niagara Helicopters, we were able to push warm air down from above to replace the cool frosty air around the vines. Thankfully, because of this we were able to save about 90% of our vulnerable developing Chardonnay shoots.
New faces on the rock

The next time you walk into the Cellar Door you'll likely see some new faces greeting you at the tasting bar. We're very happy to welcome our new Retail Supervisor and Events Coordinator, Deanna Wolske to the team. A local gal, Deanna comes to us from Butterflies, a luxury women's apparel shop that she and her mother owned in Fonthill. Deanna now leads the charge in delivering amazing Flat Rock experiences with her retail team including some new and returning personalities from previous seasons.
