The New 2008s are Here!Back to Archive
A Word from Ed
Spring is always an exciting time of year for me. And it's not because summer is just around the corner. The truth is that we get to savour the first examples of our hard work from the previous vintage. Our 2008 Rieslings, Rosé, Twisted and this year a Gewürztraminer have been bottled and are ready to enjoy. As you know, all of our wines are made in very limited quantities and sell out quickly each year. With this newsletter we are pre-releasing the wine to give you an opportunity to ensure you get to enjoy them.
In addition to the new wines, there are a number of exciting events for you to participate in - our annual "F"-ing Wine Tour, New Vintage Niagara and our Spring Open House.
Finally, as many of you know, Nadja's Vineyard Riesling is named after my mother. No May would be complete without celebrating everything our mothers do for us. All mothers are invited to join us and receive a flower in their honour.
Were you at Somewhereness?
This past Earth Day Matt Kramer - Wine Spectator Columnist and author - visited Flat Rock Cellars to celebrate his concept of Somewhereness. It was a pleasure to understand his global wine perspective and how Ontario fit into the world wine scene. He was enthusiastic about Ontario Pinot Noir, Riesling and, in particular, Chardonnay.
When he discussed Chardonnay from a global perspective, he suggested that global Chardonnay with the exception of Burgundy has no sense of place - "nowhereness" in his words. To his surprise he found Ontario Chardonnay to reflect that true sense of Somewhereness that creates a great wine. Matt may have been surprised, but we have known about Ontario's ability to make superior Chardonnay for a while. Here's to the Summer of Chardonnay.
Special Pre-Release 2008 Wines
Our spring wines have just been bottled and will be released to the public on June 1st, but we're giving you a chance to purchase our popular Rieslings and spicy Gewurztraminer before everyone else!
Starting tomorrow, Ed is offering three of our tasty '08 whites by the case:
Flat Rock Cellars 2008 Riesling:

This rich, luscious Riesling has won White Wine of the year at the Canadian Wine Awards two out of the last three years. We always sell out of this wine before the next vintage is bottled, so get your supply now so you're not disappointed later.
Flat Rock Cellars 2008 Nadja's Vineyard Riesling:
$239.40 plus bottle deposit
Our famous Riesling named for Ed's elegant mother has been a favourite of wine critics and wine lovers alike. Wine Spectator listed our 2007 Nadja's Vineyard Riesling as the ONLY Canadian wine in the Top Values of 2008.
Flat Rock Cellars Gewürztraminer:
$227.40 plus bottle deposit
It is only in exceptional years that we release a single variety Gewürztraminer. 2008 was one of those years and only the second time we have produced this amazing wine. Who knows when we'll be able to bottle the next vintage?
From the Cellar
Each month at Flat Rock Cellars we release a previous vintage wine from our cellar library stock exclusive to our retail store. For May, we have selected two wines from the 2004 vintage: our Pinot Noir ($25.00) and The Rusty Shed Chardonnay ($30.00).
See how these beautiful wines mellow with age and enjoy!
The "F"-ing Wine Tour
